Some of the best inventions have been mere innovations on previous inventions that existed. Many inventions have been discovered in response to a need in society or within business. For example, Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in order to improve business and speed up production. Innovations like this one have been going on for hundreds of years. Even early man was determined to come up with innovations of his own, such as the wheel which still plays a vital role in our lives today. Inventions are important to our development as a society and as individuals. Inventions express the creativity of their creators and the resulting innovations can be used by many. The benefits associated with inventions are usually positive in nature and the innovations are beneficial to the advancement of whichever realm they are in. Inventions can be in any field or discipline and when true innovations develop the world will rapidly assume them. Here are some innovations and inventions that have been developed and have taken their place in history:

1.) The Airplane. Inventions made in the field of air space began with the development of the airplane by the Wright Brothers in 1903. Innovations designed by these brothers are still used today and a lot of other inventions were sparked from their original ideas and creative minds. Airplane design has come a long way since 1903, but the early innovations of these brothers began the industry that has become what it is today.

2.) Tape. Inventions come in all sizes and levels of importance. The innovations of the mind of Richard G. Drew developed adhesive tape. For some of us, we use tape every day and may not know the origin of its production or the process of innovations that came from this invention. Tape was originally developed by Drew in order to make the job of a painter easier.

3.) Scuba Gear. Inn 1943, french inventor Jacques-Yves Cousteau, invented what is now considered modern scuba gear. This was a remarkable invention that allowed humans to breath under water for an extensive amount of time. A useful and needed invention scuba gear is still used, but the technology has been adapted, changed and refined over the years. The invention created and opened a whole new market and industry in the economy. Tourists, researchers and others utilize this invention to scour the depths of the ocean. Whether it is for recreation or science this invention provides the means for people to breathe under water and enjoy the atmosphere the depths of the sea has to offer.

Inventions should not be taken for granted, no matter how big or how small. Creativity and innovation will continue to produce new products from inventive minds all over the world. If you have an idea that you think may turn into a usable and excellent or even a basic invention for use, you should consider filing for a patent on that idea or invention. The patent will enable you to gain the rights to your idea and help you maintain those rights when your product has hit the market and you are able to sell it to the general public.

Patent laws ensure that inventors obtain the rights to their inventions and innovations. Inventors must figure out what their patent will be in before they attempt to file for one from the United States Patent and Trademark office. A patent can be obtained in three different areas:

1.) Utility. Inventors may come up with ideas that are in regard to machines or processes. In this type, inventors are seeking the rights to such things as a newly developed machine for a factory or a process that will speed up production at a chemical plant. Wherever the invention is implemented, inventors should obtain this patent to secure their rights to the invention and any profits that may come as a result of those inventions or newly developed processes.

2.) Design. This type is exactly what it sounds like. It entails making sure that each new and original design that is implemented into a business is not recreated elsewhere by a competitor. A design is the face of the product or the company and should be protected. Designs distinguish and separate one company from the next and it is because of this that this type of patent is required for businesses and manufacturers alike.

3.) Plants. Believe it or not, inventors can also place a patent on a plant. If you have reproduced and discovered a new variety of a plant then you can obtain this patent from the US Patent office in addition to the other available patents offered above. There are some limitations for inventors in this area though, as the originality of the plant must be established and ensured before the patent is awarded to the inventors. If the plant already exists or does not coincide with the rules set by the office the application will be denied.

There are certain conditions and limitations associated with each of these above listed patents. If you have questions or concerns about your application for one you should contact the US Patent and Trademark office. A patent should not be confuse with a copyright. A copyright will provide inventors with the rights to prevent any other inventors from producing material in the same way or with the same expression. The copyright does not however, prevent other inventors from copying the idea itself and presenting to the public in a different manner. If you are unsure whether or not you need to obtain a copyright or a patent, you can conduct a simple online search to figure out what your specific situation calls for. Keep in mind that not everything can be patented and some things are already, so make sure you have a solid and original idea before you even apply for one. An application can be done online, in the mail or in person but it does cost money. It should be also noted that the process may be lengthy and is not conducted over night. It is also a good idea for inventors to make sure there will be a market for their idea or product if they are looking to make money from its production.

Universe

If you have an innovative mind and you have developed a fresh idea that you would like to implement into society and claim it as yours, you will need to obtain a patent. A patent ensures that the invention that you come up with will be solely yours. With a patent you hold the rights to the idea or product and the patent ensures that legally no one else will be allowed to reproduce your idea, without your permission. Once you have developed your idea and finalized your product or invention, then you will need to take the proper steps in order to patent your invention. Here are the steps you need to complete in order to obtain a patent for your invention:

1.) You will need to have a written description of what your invention is exactly. Describe in detail what it does, how it works and each of its components and uses. This explanation will come in handy when you are filling out the actual application for the patent later in the process.

2.) Original? Before you go a step further, make sure you have a new and innovative idea or invention. You may think that you have created a new invention or idea but it may already exist. Many ideas are obscure or not well marketed, but this does not mean that they do not exist. So make sure that whatever the idea is, its new.

3.) Who and what. You will need to next figure out how you are going to go about filling out the application for your invention. If you know nothing about patents or the process, it may be a good idea to hire a professional to help you interpret your rights and the best way to fill out the application. The second part of this would be to figure out what type of application you want to file. There are provisional and non-provisional applications. The provisional is exactly what it sounds like. It is only for a period of one year and it only holds your place for your invention. The latter, non-provisional, is a more in depth and more expensive application. With this type of application it may be a good idea to hire that professional because they know their way around a patent and can get you the best deal.

4.) Now you can go back to that written description you did earlier in the process. This will be used in your patent application and will help define your invention. Once you have all the proper paperwork filled out and in order you can then submit your idea to the U.S Patent and Trade Mark Office. (Keep in mind that the patent you are trying to obtain is costing you money. Make sure you have a sound invention that you can make money off of to pay back the patent money you spent and more in order to turn a profit).

A patent will help protect your ideas and legally ensure that no one else will try to recreate them or make money off them. Patents are for a certain length of time and the laws surrounding patents vary from state to state.

Inventions

You have come up with a new idea and you are looking to create an invention based on that new idea. But is your idea really new? Many people may think that they are on their way to inventing a novel item, but in reality that new idea is well, not so new. When it comes to inventing you should ensure that your new idea is original. With copyright infringement and ideas stolen every day, inventing is a difficult concept to protect. Your new idea should remain your own, especially while you are in the process of inventing something based on that new idea. Inventing is not for everyone and it is a somewhat procedural process. By following these steps and advice you can try to ensure that your new idea will protected and what you ultimately end up inventing will make you rich.

-Documentation. If you think you are on your way to inventing something new, you should put your ideas on paper and have someone witness it and legally document it. Later when you are looking to prove the date of the conception of your new idea, you will be able to show written and legally validated proof of your ingenuity.

-New idea? The very first step to inventing is to make sure that your idea or ideas are new. A new idea will easily convert to a novel invention, but you need to be sure before you spend any money on inventing something that it is not already available somewhere in the world. If you try to present a “new idea” as your own and it already exists, you may be breaking the patent laws on someone else’s work or infringing on an established copyright law.

-Market. If you have come up with a new idea and you know now that the idea is something that has never been created, you should then consider the market value of what you are inventing. You should conduct the proper research in order to develop a marketing plan for your new item. Inventing is no different than any other business plan in that it needs to be well thought out, developed and implemented in order to be successful.

-If you do have a market, a new idea and the documentation, your next step would be to obtain a patent. This may be a long process so be prepared to spend some time on this part. You need to adhere to a strict set of guidelines put in place by the government.

-Proto-type. This may or may not be a needed step in the plan for your particular invention. Building a proto-type will put your plan into action and you will be able to work out any problems with its function when a proto-type is built. Also a proto-type may be shown to potential investors or buyers to ensure their satisfaction with the product before more money is spent to put the item into mass production.

-Sell. Finally come up with a pricing strategy for your new product. You can collaborate with others in order to develop a marketing and pricing strategy.
